Mother's Day Q&A with Polly Markus

Introducing Polly…

The women behind Miss Polly’s Kitchen, Polly brings a grounded, honest warmth to everything she does. As a mother, founder and food lover, she has built a beautiful world around simple, flavourful cooking that fits into real life — especially the beautifully busy parts.

Polly and I first connected through our husbands, who have been friends for years, but it wasn’t until we both had babies in the same year that we naturally became much closer. Nothing quite bonds you like navigating the early stages of motherhood together — the highs, the chaos, and everything in between. Like us, they’re always smiling through it, always up for a last-minute walk, and firmly believe that a good cup of coffee can fix most things… and when it can’t, a Ripe Deli lasagne for dinner will do the trick.

What I love most about Polly is that what you see is exactly what you get. Her optimism, her sparkle, and her genuine talent in the kitchen all come through so naturally, both online and in person. She has a way of making life feel lighter, even in the busiest seasons.

We spent time with Polly in her world, talking about motherhood, routine, and the reality of juggling it all with a young family and business. At the heart of it, she shared what so many of us feel — that it’s the small, simple moments that carry you through.

As mothers, we are constantly giving our time and energy to others, what do you do for yourself to make sure your own cup is full?

I go for a really early morning walk on my own a few times a week, and I treasure that time. The streets are quiet, there are no distractions, and I get a lot of thinking done. Oh of course, getting my coffee fix on the way home. Heaven.

How has motherhood influenced the way you cook and share food at home?

I’ve mastered the art of the 15-minute meal that still tastes pretty damn good.

What do you love most about being a mum?

The bond we share and the love I have for her is indescribable. The smallest things bring me the biggest joy, her big smile, her giggle, the curious expression on her face as she discovers the world or new people, and the way her little eyebrows furrow. Motherhood has given me a whole new perspective on life, in the best way possible.

Are there any go-to recipes or staples that get you through busy weeks?

I always have a bag of prawns in the freezer; they defrost so quickly and you can whip up an Asian-inspired prawn omelette in minutes or a quick miso broth with prawns and noodles. Pre-cooked packet rice is also a staple I swear by, no shame! Easy marinades are a simple way to zhush up any protein.

Best piece of advice to other working mothers? Or a good piece of advice you have received from a working mother?

Gosh, I don’t know if I’m in any position to give advice, as I’m right here in it with everyone else! But I do think mothers are absolutely elite. You’re holding down a job, running a household, raising a little human, trying to stay present. I guess my one reminder would be that everything is a season, oh and to take it one day at a time, as my mum reminds me constantly!
